Nadine's Journey
She expressed her wish for dreading her hair for many years and that she now feels she wants to get it done no matter what. In reality, it was not the most ideal time to spend a full day sitting on our chair, given that Nadine has an 8-month old son to take care of. Luckily, she has an amazing husband who offered to help out with baby sitting... and she also found that we are very flexible and adjusted the process to her needs and requirements.
And finally the day came and we started her journey of her long, blonde, dreadlocks.
The first part is the separation of the root hair. At this point we discuss with the client the desired thickness of the dreads. Nadine wanted medium to thin locks with natural ends.
Our method consists of a long and patient process but this is the only professionral way to do dreadlocks. There are of course many short cuts one can take but it is not our style. We take this job seriously and are proud to say that in over 11 years we never had not even one single unhappy client.
And so after a full day's work, here is the job, with 25 beautiful locks.
Nadine wanted to decorate her new dreads with some dread beads. We suggested these bronze tribal beads that go very well with the colour of her hair.
Da! Da! Another happy client :)
BEFORE AFTER
The journey of Nadine, in reality, has only just begun. For the dreadlocks journey will take approximately one year to be completed. After one year that is when dreads start to mature and take a life on its own. Until that time, dreads will require regular maintenance, patience and much love.
List of very common and normal things that happen to new dreadlocks:
* Hair will start coming out from the root
Of course the new hair that's growing will grow straight and will need to be dreadlocked.
What you can do: Every 3 months (or so) go for a maintenance session.
* Hair will start coming out from the dreads
Understand that your hair has been through a huge change so its normal for it to try and go back into its natural (unlocked) way. It just needs some time to adjust to the new 'change'
What you can do: The loctician will fix this during the maintenance sessions.
* Bumps and lumps will start to form in the dread
Sleeping is the culprit here. Your head squashes the new dreads and they flatten out.
What you can do: Palm-roll your dreads every morning to keep them in shape. In any case, your loctician will also fix this during the maintenance sessions.

Earth Garden 2016
The 10th edition of Earth Garden was held last month, 3-5 June 2016, and it was exceptionally awesome! Super nice weather, excellent location, happy vibes, beautiful people and amazing music!
As usual, we set up our little marque, put up a stall and started Dreadlocking!
Surprise Surprise! We made it on the national newspaper with this huge image :) of Nakul and Joshua jammin' at the stall and our friend Sandy looking on... I was actually next to Sandy but they decided to crop me out!
Our colourful stall featured our recent handmade pallet art, the most popular hemp rucksacks, our handmade feather hair clips, bohemian and rasta jewellery, ethnic clothing, and our spiritual corner with singing bowls and hindu and buddhist statues - all from our shop Bohemia.
These two were the stars of the show!

Sliema Arts Festival 2016
Sliema Art's Festival official photos granted us this amazing shot of Nakul doing Emma's dreads on the Sliema Promenade. It took him the entire Sunday morning and afternoon and at the end we had a very happy client :)
It was a week-long fun festival starting on 11th June with a freakin' windy weekend! But still we went on and had a little stall in the most cool location ever, right next to the beach!
This is Surfer's Paradise - 'We are all Aliens' set up near the beach at night!
Organized by Duncan F and Alex Thomson this amazing set up was definitely the coolest I've ever seen :)
A kinda thing that attracts good vibes only :)

Preparing your hair for new dreads
So, you've been thinking of making dreads for how long? a month, two, three, a year, since you can remember? OK so now you've made up your mind and ready for it! And until the big day you'd be wondering if there is anything you could do to prepare your hair for the big change! Here are a few tips:
1) Stop using conditioner
Your hair needs to be the opposite of soft to lock in the best of ways.
2) If you are thinking of dying your hair, do it before the dreads
The chemicals from the dye or the bleach will actually help your hair lock easier
3) Start using a residue-free shampoo
Your hair will already have to deal with the new dreadlock style, so at least the shampoo will not be another new thing to deal with.
4) Avoid hair sprays, wax, gel, etc
These are not the type of chemicals that do your hair or scalp any good. Quite the contrary. With the introduction of your imminent dreadlocks, you cannot afford having dirty hair or a flaky scalp.
5) Decide what kind of locks suit you
Consider your hair type and also your face shape. You could browse images of different people with dreadlocks to figure out what thickness of locks you want. If you have large volume of hair you can choose 100 super thin locks or 50 thicker ones. Also, ask yourself if your hair is long enough - dont forget that the length will decrease during the dreadlock process. If it is not, decide if you will be happy with short locks or if you want to opt for extensions. You can also use extension hair to increase the thickness of the locks.
6) Research
You will need to understand what is the best way to maintain your dreads once you have them. Prepare a set of questions to ask your loctician, check out forums and specialized websites about the best way to wash them, dry them, keep them good looking and good smelling. Get yourself informed.
Last but not least, make sure to motivate yourself for the maintenance and patience that you will need to give to your dreads. The first 6-12 months will be the toughest. Your hair will need to recover from the initial shock and adjust itself to its new style. Be ready for surprises - sometimes dreadlocks take a life of their own. No matter how much research you do and how many people you talk to, remember that every individual is unique and therefore every case is different.
You will probably notice that I have not included the point where you decide what kind of method you want to make dreadlocks with, as I believe that the best way is the crochet technique and strongly discard all the others - unless you have that kind of rough hair and you go for the neglect/natural method.
However you definitely need to decide WHO will do your dreadlocks. Make sure you choose your loctician very carefully. He or she has to be someone who is able to show you samples of previous works, and let you have comments from previous customers. Do you think it is a good idea to economize on your hair health and appearance? I don't think so! So be careful of cheap amateurs. Go for a professional loctician. And once you have found someone with a proven track record of excellence and customer satisfaction, you know your hair is in good hands.
Go for the ride!

Earth Garden 2014
The most incredible festival in Malta, Earth Garden, took place on the 6th, 7th and 8th of June.
Our stall was set up near the Enchanted Forest, under the grateful shade of the trees.
With different live music every 2 hours, we enjoyed every beat.
'How badly do you like skulls' was a collection of jewellery, scarfs, cushion covers, and anatomically precise skull clay sculptures that our friend Tom creates.
Our stall was enhanced with beautiful bags, belts and hats, handmade from Nepal.
There was also the section with a variety of body piercing items, including glow in the dark tunnels, together with steel, titanium and organic piercings.
And finally there was the brand new stock of dreadlocks beanies, hats, beads and charms.
All good things come to an end...
As we watch the video of the 2014 edition, and see ourselves... we recall those fantastic memories... and look forward for Earth Garden 2015!

Keep Calm And Get Dreadlocks featured dreadlocks making and fixing services as well as hair strings. The selection of over 50 clip-on strings that can be seen hanging in the above image, were a huge success. An array of colours, beads, feathers, charms, and different techniques of macrame made them a sell-out.
