Dreadlocks at the workplace

I start with a recent post on our Facebook Group 'Dreadlock Culture Malta'.

Yes, when applying for a new job, people with dreadlocks are generally discriminated, as are people with tattoos. If you have dreadlocks, you won't be getting much luck securing a job that is considered front of house.

But what about safe-keeping your job, if one day you go to work with dreadlocks? If you are lucky and the bosses do not pick on you to get you fired, but truly appreciate your talents and effort no matter your hair style, here are some points you may wish to take note of:

1. Make sure your hair is neat and tidy

Keep your professional appearance from head to toe. You don't want to appear dirty or scruffy. If you keep your locks clean and smelling good all the time, no one will really mind the difference.

2. Have your hair decently styled

There are so many ways to pull up your locks. From a standard pony-tail for men, to beautiful up-dos for women, make sure you are consistently smart.


3. Dress smart

Your hair style should compliment your outfit, and vice-versa. You need to always appear professional. This way you will feel confident with yourself and make your colleagues and clients comfortable around you.

4. Know your dress-code

In addition to the above, you need to make sure you follow the Company's dress-code rules. Do you need to wear a hat? Gloves? An apron? A name tag? Always be in line with those rules.

5. Respect

You must give it before you earn it! Analyze your behaviour with your colleagues and make sure you respect everyone, even if you don't personally like them.

6. Be the best

Sometimes being good is just not good enough - you have to be the best. Do your job well, double check yourself and exceed your boss's or client's expectations.

 

7. Don't take it personal

If, after all your efforts you still feel that you are being discriminated because of your locks, remember that the only thing we have control of is ourselves. So decide that you don't care what others think of you and just be yourself.

I am a feather fan and a feather freak.

Whenever I go out in nature I am more looking down than straight or up.

Always on the lookout for feathers :)

 

And personally I am much more happier if a man gifts me feathers instead of flowers! Especially if they are white feathers - my absolute favourite <3

I found some real incredible feathers, some belonging to eagles, owls, pheasants, ducks, crows, pigeons and a myriad of different birds. 

 

With feathers you can edge your look to a wild one.

Or use them for a statement of individuality and personality.

There are many ways you can accessorize and decorate your hair with the use of feathers. The easiest way is to stick loose feathers into your hair and fix them with a small rubber or pin. This looks better if you get hold of a couple of long and really awesome patterned feathers.

If you dont have time to go look for feathers, you can find many of these ready-made items on the net. 

Clips with coloured feathers - often also with charms and beads. One of the most common hair feathers are those of the peacock, undoubtedly the most beautiful natural feather on the planet!

Another very popular feather for the hair is the grizzly rooster feathers - thin and long striped feathers usually used for extensions. The original feathers come only in brown or black shades with white. But you can find practically any colour. Usually they come as clip-ons.

Head bands are also an easy way to show off feathers in your hair. Easy to do yourselves with a string (plain or macrame' or brail) with pieces of feathers attached with it. 

Feather chains are becoming more popular as they appear to be fashion jewellery.

Another way to incorporate feathers in your dreads is to string them around your locks or extensions directly.

Go for a walk in nature, along forests and near lakes, you are sure to find a feather or two or more.  

When you are using feathers that you yourself have found, then they become a pleasant reminder, a story to tell, and a sweet memory!

 

It's gettin' hot!!! Dread Styles for the Summer

First week of July, and we have a temperature of 31 degrees already! It's gettin' hot! And this is nothing! In July and August we will suffer heat waves of up to 40 degrees! 

One of the most things that can be really frustrating during these hot days of Summer is the hair on shoulders and face. But don't despair, and don't go for the scissors either. Check out some ideas below to put up your dreads in style!

KNOTTED STYLE

The most common and easiest way to pull up your dreads is by grabbing your dreads and twist them in one large knot.

BABA STYLE

Basically the same concept as the knotted style but instead of pulling the hair behind, you pull it on top of your head.

PLAITED STYLE

Divide your dreads in 3 equal parts and make a plait. Very easy and comfortable. There are various styles of plaits - and you can always do the plait sideways too.

 

 

INTERTWINED

Looks complicated, but is quite simple. Probably it is simpler if you have a friend helping you. Start by separating each one your dreads and twist and turn the dreads in each other. You can do it systematically, and you end up with up in a nice symmetrical shape - or you can do it un-systematically, with your dreads in a nice chaotic style.

Taking inspiration once again from the Baba style, you can knot up your dreads sideways and make a huge shell shape.
