Facts about wax on dreadlocks

If you are considering making dreadlocks, then you might have come across locticians who make the use of wax. There are some people who encourage the use of wax, as well as of creams, gels, pastes and other products. They preach that they are an important factor to help the hair lock and tighten and will help speed up the process of your dreadlocks. But it is important to think twice before resorting to such products, for it is never wise to use chemicals, especially when there is a 'natural' way to go about it!

Usually those who are new to dreadlocks don't understand the maturity process of dreadlocks, which usually takes several months if not years, and are led to believe that they can obtain the same result with wax. If it sounds too good to be true, its because it is! Dreadlocks mature with time, by growing and interlocking into a matted form. Wax will stop the hair from even moving! Instead of the leaving the hair to tighten in its natural way, wax will actually slow down the process because the hair is held up together by a sticky substance and cannot move freely.

The use of wax is simply a short-cut option to give the impression that the hair is locked well. However this is only an illusion as the effect does not stay long, and after a few months the dreadlocks loose their shape, forcing the purchase of more wax. What the wax will in reality do is to leave the hair with a nasty white sticky residue which is almost impossible to remove, since it is a non-water soluble substance. In return, the residue will attract moisture, which will attract dirt, and finally the awful smell of 'dread-rot'.

What is by far the most effective method to make and grow dreadlocks, is "a la natural"!
Seriously, what is better that the natural way?
It will take long, it will take patience and commitment, but it is safe, cheaper, and the final result will be worth it!
